Future Chefs

A year-round program supporting high school students in Boston who desire a career in the culinary arts. Beginning their sophomore year of high school, students must go through three programs that must be completed in sequence: Future Chef Prepares, Future Chef Delivers, and Future Chef Sustains. Students are trained by professional chefs in each program and are compensated after completing their first year.

UCI Cancer Research Program

The UC Irvine, Cancer Research Institute sponsors a summer program in cancer research for high school students. The overall goal is to build the pipeline for the next generation of cancer researchers. A select group of high school students work in the laboratories of CRI affiliates for 6 weeks during the summer. They carry out bench work on research projects under the guidance of faculty, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers or technicians. They also attend a weekly seminar where they receive advice on careers and the college admissions process. At the end of the program they give an oral and poster presentation on their research.

Eligibility:

Open to current junior (11th Grade) or senior (12th Grade) students enrolled in an Orange County High School only.

BioBus High School Internship

Interns will receive training and mentorship from research scientists, while developing their own independent projects using research-grade equipment, participate in outreach events, and gain science communication skills. Interns will be paid by the hour.

Student Worksite Experience Program

A volunteer program offering opportunities to gain practical experience by engaging in projects and tasks that contribute to professional development. Student volunteers are an important part of recruiting and developing skilled workers, and preparing the workforce of the future.

Eligibility:

Applicants must be at least half-time enrolled and have a minimum GPA of 2.0. Students should also be at least 16 years old or older and be able to provide a work permit if 17 or under. Applicants must also pass a background investigation, health and safety testing, and meet VISA requirements for non-citizens.

SMASH Academy

A 3 year residential college prep program where students are able to deepen their STEM education. Each summer, participants attend a different university for tuition-free studies, and participate in monthly programs during the school year. Each student also has a mentor in he STEM field, with whom they can connect.

Eligibility:

Applicants must have a minimum 8th grade 3.0 GPA or equivalent and be in 9th grade at time of application. In addition, they must attend a public high school or private high school via scholarship and reside in the US within 50 miles of a SMASH site. Student should have strong mathematics skills appropriate for grade level, as determined by state standardized math test scores. Lastly, applicants to SMASH Morehouse must be male.

Amphibious Achievement

A free school-year program for high school students in the Greater Boston area combining coaching in rowing and swimming with college prep workshops. Achievers gain a current MIT student as a mentor for one-on-one support to be used as an efficient resource. Program sessions are biannual, occurring in spring and autumn. Sessions are 10 weeks each.

Must be a high school student in the greater Boston area.

MathROOTS

√mathroots is a 14-day summer program hosted by MIT-PRIMES for promising high school students from underrepresented backgrounds or underserved communities who are interested in exploring creative topics in mathematics. Students will discover new mathematical ideas and learn problem-solving skills through a series of classes, group activities, and invited lectures led by a team of instructors with diverse experiences teaching both research and competition math.

Eligibility:

Must be a US citizen or attending a high school in the US (before the last year of high school). The applicant should be between the ages of 14-18 and demonstrate academic excellence, especially in mathematics. You should also be comfortable with high school algebra, geometry, trigonometry, exponents, and logarithms. Precalculus is strongly recommended. Calculus is not required.

Business Opportunities Summer Session (BOSS) at Penn State

BOSS is a two-week residential program for high school students interested in obtaining a business education in college. It is an opportunity for these students to take college preparatory courses and business fundamentals taught by Penn State faculty.

Eligibility:

The BOSS Program is for students who are entering 12th grade and have a strong interest in pursuing a business education at the college level.

Michigan Health Sciences Pre-College Exposure Academy

A free two-week residential program hosted at the University of Michigan for rising 11th and 12th grade high school students. Participants take college prep workshops and courses necessary for the medical field, along with one on one mentoring to talk about the college process, and fun community events with fellow students.

Eligibility:

Applicants must be a US citizens or permanent resident in the 10th or 11th grade at time of application submission. In addition, students must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative and science GPA. Applicants from communities that are disadvantaged economically, educationally, or socially are encouraged to apply.

High School Health Careers Program

A free four-week residential program for high school sophomores and juniors hosted at UMass Boston. Students are exposed to several medical professions from job shadowing or internship positions. They also have many networking opportunities with doctors, scientists, and medical students.

Eligibility:

Applicants must be Massachusetts residents who are a US citizen or have permanent resident status. In addition, they must also be attending a high school in Massachusetts as a high school sophomore or junior. The application requires applicants to fall under one of the two conditions: under-represented individuals (African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, and South East Asians) and /or disadvantaged individuals (educationally or economically).
