Over the past few weeks, I have had the opportunity to interview Kamea Carson, a junior in California. Kamea makes the most of her high school years by participating in clubs/activities such as Leadership, California Scholarship Federation, Latino Honor Society, American Cancer Society, and Students for Social Justice. She is also the historian for the Filipino-American Honor Society and the Committee Lead for Red Cross. Some of Kamea's accomplishments include being Class President in her sophomore and junior years, earning Principal’s List through her freshman, sophomore, and junior years, and completing more than 200 hours of community service. She has also been a Varsity Women’s Volleyball starter since her freshman year. Outside of school, her hobbies include being on a competitive dance team, playing club volleyball, and finding time to volunteer at organizations whose purpose is to help support those in need.
Additionally, Kamea started 2 clubs this year: Reality Check and K.I.D.S. Club. Reality Check Club was created to help students prepare for their future by introducing them to useful information that’s not part of daily course work but necessary life skills. In this article, Kamea will talk about what K.I.D.S. club is, its impact, and its goals for the future.
1. What does the K.I.D.S club do and what is its purpose?
K.I.D.S. club stands for Kids Inspiring Dreams club. We strive to give students opportunities to work with kids in our community and help them reach their potential. Our purpose is to support youth programs by organizing creative activities to promote positivity, collecting donations to provide needed supplies and resources, and inspiring children to become confident, well-rounded individuals.
2. Who does this club impact and in what way?
This club impacts the youth in our community along with us as club members because we strive to be good role models and encourage kids in a positive manner.
3. How has this club changed after the pandemic? What are some struggles you faced/are facing now that you have to run the club from home, and how did you overcome them?
Initially, we wanted to interact with the kids face-to-face and connect with them more; however, with the pandemic, we had to modify our plans to honor social distancing practices and have focused our approach to helping the youth programs by contributing resources and items needed. It’s difficult not being able to communicate directly with the kids and the club members. Some ideas are challenging to accomplish within the restrictions of the pandemic safety protocols, but as club officers, we encourage our members to provide input and offer ideas and to keep our minds open and optimistic to future opportunities.
4. What are the club’s short- and long-term goals?
The club’s short-term goals include providing and donating items necessary for the youth programs and connecting with children remotely to help them grow and flourish. We hope the K.I.D.S. club will eventually grow from not only helping our community but expanding our boundaries to help different areas with different people.
5. What advice would you give to someone who wanted to start or join a club, especially during the current pandemic?
My advice for anyone who wants to start or join a club is to be unafraid to give your idea a try. Initially, the club may start off small, but as long as you are passionate, motivated, hard-working, and especially patient during these times, your club or club membership will grow and you’ll appreciate the experience and results.
